Lori Straus

MA German alumna; Theatre Manager, Registry Theatre

Lori StrausLori Straus, MA ’03 (German), Theatre Manager for the Registry Theatre in Kitchener, ON, says that although she is no longer pursuing a career in academe, graduate studies at University of Waterloo provided her with the skills and professionalism necessary to her career.

The Registry Theatre is a community theatre located in downtown Kitchener and is sponsored by J.M. Drama Alumni, a community theatre group. As Theatre Manager Lori’s duties include co-ordinating rental contracts of the building, box office sales, writing grants, fundraising and editing the Theatre’s website. She says that it was her grad studies at UWaterloo that truly prepared her for her position and that she was instilled with a real sense of professionalism from the Department.

During her MA, Lori co-produced, co-directed and acted in “Der Besuch der alten Dame”, a play by Friedrich Dürrenmatt which was sponsored by our Department and she considers the play as one of her favourite memories here. Although having 20 years of performing arts experience (primarily in dance), she had not considered it professionally until this point. After completing 2 years of her PhD Studies, Lori switched careers to theatre management and she is currently working towards her certificate in Arts and Culture Management through distance education from Grant MacEwan College in Edmonton.

Lori says that one of her favourite things about the department was the variety of people from different backgrounds and her advice to current students is to “talk to the professors! Once you sit down and talk with your professors, you will see that they’re more than happy to help you through your problems. They want you to pass with flying colours.”
