Tim Westhead

Award-winning educator was an English graduate student at Waterloo

Tim WestheadTim Westhead, a dedicated educator, author, actor, and popular speaker, is the seventh recipient of the Faculty of Arts Alumni Achievement Award. The award recognizes Waterloo Arts alumni who have made outstanding contributions to their professional field or in community and public service.

Tim graduated from UW in 1971 with an MA in English. He holds a BA in English and Psychology from Waterloo Lutheran University (1969), a BEd from the University of Toronto (1972), and an Honour Specialist English teaching certificate (1974).

Tim enjoyed thirty years as a secondary school teacher and was the head of English at Stephen Leacock Collegiate Institute, in Agincourt, Ontario, from 1984 until his retirement from the Toronto District School Board in 2002. “Mr. Westhead spent a career influencing and being a mentor to countless students and a role model for hundreds of teachers at his school and throughout the Province of Ontario,” says Lorne Hicks (former colleague at Stephen Leacock Collegiate).

Throughout his career, Tim received many prestigious teaching nominations and awards, including a nomination for the Prime Minister’s Awards for Teaching Excellence (1999). In 2003, in recognition for his continuing dedication to teaching (even in retirement), he was presented with the Ontario Public School Boards’ Association’s Fred L. Bartlett Memorial Award for his “outstanding contribution to education throughout Ontario.” In that same year, he was featured in the Toronto Star after actor Mike (“Austin Powers”) Myers, one of Tim’s former students, acknowledged Tim in a nationally televised speech during Myers’ induction into Canada’s Walk of Fame.

For more than a decade, Tim worked to create and teach “bridging” English as model courses to offer assistance to English as Second Language students in Toronto schools. From 2000 to 2010 he instructed Honour Specialist English candidates for Queen’s University’s Faculty of Education in Durham Region, Ontario. During his retirement, Tim has created Tim Westhead Productions and has been invited to deliver keynotes, featured presentations, and workshops across North America for business and financial institutions, universities and educational associations, and schools and parent groups on a host of interesting topics. “All of them entertaining and with practical content,” says Hicks.
