How to apply for exchange

crowded street in Hong Kong, pagoda-style arch on the water at sunset, colorful staircase in Chile, Andes mountains, colorful buildings along a canal in Venice

While you normally go on exchange in your third year, you should start preparing for this experience as early as possible, as you usually need to apply for exchange 8-12 months in advance!

Thinking about applying?

If you are thinking about applying, you need to do a few things:

  1. Research the exchange destinations and narrow down your top 5 choices (note: you do not need to use all five choices in your one application).
  2. Make sure you meet the eligibility criteria for the universities you want to attend.
  3. Consider enrolling in related language or culture courses

Ready to Apply?

First, you will need to attend the Mandatory Information Session. Please see the Go Abroad Applicaton Steps (Before Match) for upcoming dates and times.

Once you have attended, you will be given access to the Passport application site. Make sure to complete your application before the deadline. First round of applications are due November 1st, 2018.

After you have applied

After you submit your application and pay the application fee, your application will be sent to your academic advisors for endorsement/approval of your exchange school choices. Once you learn the specific school with which you have been matched (late January), you will begin the course approval process, which you will receive further details about via email.

If you have any questions about the experience and want to further discuss, you can book an appointment by emailing artsinternationalexchange@uwaterloo.ca.

Before you depart

Make sure you have made arrangements for your visa, travel and housing—do not leave this until the last minute!
