Our Mandate

The Association of Canadian University Planning Programs (ACUPP) includes 18 universities with a total of 24 programs that offer professional training in urban and regional planning that meets the accreditation standards of the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP). The primary goal of the association is to promote excellence in planning education, research and practice by:

  • Exchanging information concerning curriculum design, pedagogic methods and activities
  • Facilitating collaborative teaching and research
  • Promoting student exchanges and field trips
  • Promoting scholarly research on planning in Canada
  • Providing opportunities for students and faculty to work along with professional planners, community organizations and other stakeholders on current planning issues and projects
  • Providing informed comment on the academic accreditation criteria and procedures that are administered by professional associations to ensure that these are appropriate, effective and fair
  • Facilitating international collaboration in planning education, research and practice

The Association is governed by a charter. Meetings are held at least once a year to discuss issues affecting planning education and research in Canada, report on current activities, plan new initiatives and elect officers of the Association.

The Association collaborates with the Canadian Association of Planning Students (CAPS) and the Canadian Institute of Planners on activities that promote planning education, research and practice. Students and faculty serve on several CIP committees and the President of the Association is a member (non-voting) of the National Council. Particular attention is given to CIP activities that concern academic affairs, publications, policy research and international programs.

Close collaboration is also maintained with the Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP) in the U.S. and other academic associations throughout the world.


L’Association des Programmes Universitaires Canadiens en Urbanisme (APUCU) regroupe 18 universités, offrant un total de 24 programmes de formation professionnelle en aménagement et en urbanisme reconnus par l’Institut canadien des urbanistes (ICU). L’objectif principal de l’association est de promouvoir l’excellence de l’enseignement, de la recherche et de la pratique de la planification. Ceci est effectué des façons suivantes:

  • L’échange d’information concernant les méthodes et activités pédagogiques.
  • Le soutien de l’enseignement et de la recherche collaboratifs.
  • La promotion d’échanges étudiants et de sorties éducatives.
  • La promotion de la recherche académique en urbanisme au Canada.
  • La création d’opportunités pour que les étudiants et le corps professoral puissent travailler des projets et questions d’actualité avec des urbanistes professionnels, des associations professionnelles et d’autres parties concernés.
  • Le commentaire informé des critères d’agrément académique et des processus administrés par les associations professionnelles, pour assurer que ceux-ci soient appropriés, efficaces et justes.
  • Le soutien de la collaboration internationale en formation, recherche et pratique de l’urbanisme.

L’association est régie par une charte. Des réunions sont organisées au moins une fois par an pour discuter des questions affectant l’enseignement et la recherche de l’urbanisme au Canada, rendre compte des activités en cours, planifier de nouvelles initiatives, et élire les membres de la direction de l’association.

L’association collabore avec l’Association canadienne des étudiants en aménagement et en urbanisme (ACEAU) et l’Institut canadien des urbanistes pour des activités qui promeuvent l’enseignement, la recherche, et la pratique de l’urbanisme. Les étudiants et le corps professoral font partie de plusieurs comités de l’ICU et le président de l’association est un membre (sans vote) du Conseil national. Une attention particulière est accordée aux activités concernant les affaires académiques, les publications, la recherche des politiques, et les programmes internationaux.

Des liens proches sont aussi maintenus avec l’Association of Collegiate Schools of Planning (ACSP) et d’autres associations académiques par tout au monde.
