CBB CREATE Series: Ethical Research with Human Participants

Speaker: Heather Root, Senior Manager, Research Ethics, Office of Research, University of Waterloo.

Description:

This presentation will identify the core principals of ethical research design and discuss when ethics clearance is necessary. An overview of the ethics
review process will be provided, and resources to help prepare an ethics application will be discussed. Additional training available to faculty and staff
will be introduced. The Responsible Conduct of Research framework and researchers responsibilities will be reviewed.

Speaker bio:

Heather Root has a background in basic and clinical research with a MSc in Bio-molecular Science from the University of Amsterdam and a PhD in Molecular Genetics from the University of Toronto.  Prior to joining the office of Research Ethics, Heather worked as a Post-Doctoral Fellow, Research Associate and Clinical Research Associate in the Genetics and Genome Biology and Translational Medicine Programs at the Hospital for Sick Children.  She has acted as the lead coordinator and project manager of an international Phase 3b Fetal Drug Trial at the Hospital for Sick Children.  Heather is a Certified Clinical Research Professional, and has a certificate in clinical research from the Michener Institute for Applied Health Sciences.  As Senior Manager in the Office of Research Ethics, Heather supports the Clinical Research Ethics Committee, coordinates joint reviews with local hospitals and universities, and reviews ethics applications in the Faculties of Science
