DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT\n\nEating is part of everyday life and takes on specia
 l significance for\nall of us at one point or another. Nearly all cultural
  activities take\nplace in the presence of foods\, many with an emphasis o
 n accentuated\nflavour\, colour\, and texture. Celebration of life through
  food is\ncommon around the world\, and this is a hint as to the special\n
 significance of food in our lives. But what makes food desirable\, and\nwo
 rthy of expressing joy and celebration? Does any of this matter for\npatie
 nts in healthcare settings? In this talk I will explore the\nspecial signi
 ficance of food in cultures around the world\, and the\nrole that the brai
 n plays in rendering food worthy of special\nsignificance. This will be a 
 different take on food and eating than\nwould be prescribed by a conventio
 nal focus on health promotion\;\nhowever\, the key to addressing the need 
 for flavour and the\nrelationship between flavour and other sensory dimens
 ions of foods\nwill be explored as critical to promoting healthy diets. Br
 ain\nnetworks involved in restraint\, indulgence and decision-making will 
 be\ngiven special consideration\, and we will review some findings from th
 e\nneuroimaging and brain stimulation literature. Importantly\, our\ncover
 age of the topic of eating will be framed by the evolutionarily\nancient r
 oots of the drive toward calorie maximization present in\nnearly all heter
 otrophic organisms\, including herbivores and\ncarnivores\, but especially
  omnivores (e.g.\, humans). We will conclude\nwith a discussion of why und
 erstanding these dynamics are critical to\nconsider when tailoring menu op
 tions and dietary prescriptions for\npatients\, and why we should consider
  the relationship between brain\nhealth and eating as being a reciprocal o
 ne.
