External Scholarships

NSERC, CIHR, and OGS

The Department of Biology will be accepting applications for the 2017 NSERC and OGS competitions in the Fall of 2016 and Winter of 2017 respectively. Applications and supporting documentation are due in the Department as follows:

CIHR Doctoral deadline: September 27th at 9:20 a.m. (EST)

Applications should submitted online. A hardcopy with supporting documentation is not required to be submitted to the Biology Graduate Office. This award is administered outside of the University of Waterloo, so a separate OGS application will be required for consideration. 

NSERC Doctoral deadline: October 14th at 8:00 p.m. (EST)

Applications should submitted online. A hardcopy with supporting documentation is not required to be submitted to the Biology Graduate Office.

Tri-Agency (CIHR, NSERC, SSHRC) Canada Graduate Scholarship Master's (CGS-M) deadline: December 1st at 8:00 p.m. (ET)

Applications should submitted online. A hardcopy with supporting documentation is not required to be submitted to the Biology Graduate Office.

OGS deadline: October 14th for international students; February 1st for Canadian citizens/Permanent Residents

Applications must be submitted by the appropriate deadline. We request that students submit both a hard-copy and electronic version of the application to the Biology Graduate Office.

When ordered through the Graduate Studies Office, there is no fee charged for University of Waterloo transcript required for scholarship competitions administered by the Graduate Studies Office (GSO). Please ensure that any course INC's are resolved before ordering transcripts.

NSERC scholarships

Please see the NSERC website for complete eligibility conditions and application procedures. A brief summary is provided below:

  • Applicants must have obtained a first-class average (A- or 80%) in EACH of the last two completed years of study. Any exceptions to this requirement must be accompanied by supporting documentation that justifies the submission.
  • Applicants must be a Canadian citizen or a Permanent Resident of Canada (as of the deadline date of the application).
  • Applicants must have a degree in Science or Engineering from a university whose standing is acceptable to NSERC at the time the award is held.

OGS scholarships

Please see the OGS website for complete eligibility conditions and application procedures. A brief summary is provided below:

  • Applicants entering the first or second year of graduate studies at the time of application must have an overall average of at least A- (80%), or the equivalent, on the last 20 one-term/semester courses completed.
  • Applicants entering the third year or beyond of graduate studies at the time of application must have an overall average of at least A-, or the equivalent, on all graduate courses completed.
  • Applicants must be enrolled full time in an approved graduate program at the time the award is held.
  • Applicants can be International Students. 

University of Waterloo President's Graduate scholarships

  • The President's Graduate scholarship valued at up to $10,000 per year (in addition to the Tri-Council Scholarship or OGS)
  • $5,000 ($1,666 per term) will be paid by the University as a scholarship
  • $5,000 will be paid by the department as a Teaching Assistantship or Research Assistantship or a combination of both. In Biology it's paid as a teaching assistantship.
  • The President's Graduate Scholarship is provided in each year the eligible scholarship is held while the recipient is registered in a Master's or PhD program at the University of Waterloo.
