Rooney lab wins the 2016 Holiday Hallway competition

The Department of Biology has claimed its 2016 festive door winners!

Each year, the Biology Graduate Student Association opens registration for interested grads to have the opportunity to list their labs in the annual festive door competition.

This year, the science buildings saw a total of eight teams competing to determine who could design the most creative display of the season.

Waterloo biologist part of a research collaboration creating new genetic toolbox

Waterloo biologist Trevor Charles is part of a newly formed collaboration that has received $250,000 in funding from Genome Canada’s Disruptive Innovations in Genomics (DIG) program to retool a well-studied bacterial strain into accepting genetic material from other bacterial species.

Waterloo biologist explains the science behind Rio’s green pools

The green water of Rio’s outdoor Olympic pools has baffled athletes, organizers and spectators but not Waterloo Biologist Kirsten Müller. She is fairly certain that algae is the culprit.

Although low chlorine levels, minerals and copper can also cause water to look green, it’s the cloudy appearance of the water that suggests the presence of an algal biomass.

Science student volunteers her way to success

Samantha Fowler wants you to get excited about science.

This term, she secured her dream co-op position as an Outreach Associate at the University of Waterloo Science Outreach office, coordinating the Waterloo Let’s Talk Science site. Let’s Talk Science is a charitable organization with sites at more than 40 post-secondary institutions.
