Guest post from Kirsten Müller
I had the wonderful opportunity today to be present at the engagement of Michael Kani and Genevieve Braganza. This was a strategically planned, surprise engagement that took place in the lobby of the Dana Porter Library, where Michael and Genevieve met. Michael invited Genevieve to the library under the premise of an announcement regarding a donation for pharmacy. UW banners, a podium and a screen were set up for this “announcement” and at 7:00 pm, the lobby began to fill with recruited onlookers for this presentation. Michael began by thanking everyone for their support and especially acknowledged Genevieve and asked everyone to applaud her. He then started a presentation, on the screen and an acoustic guitar player began playing their song, “I’m yours” by Jason Mraz. The presentation highlighted their disastrous first date (Swiss Chalet), their time together, Michael’s promises to Genevieve (including to never take her to Swiss Chalet again) and then most importantly “will you marry me”. Michael then proceed to get down on one knee. There wasn’t a dry eye in the Library tonight!
The future bride and groom both graduated with B.Sc. degrees from UW Science in 2007 and Michael completed a M. Sc. in my laboratory, here in the Department of Biology, in 2009. Michael is currently a student with the UW School of Pharmacy student and Genevieve has just been accepted to the School of Dentistry at the University of Saskatchewan.
Along with the Biology Department, we wish them a bright and loving future together!
