Waterloo Biology is one of the top ten biology programs in Canada for 2021, according to the influential annual Maclean’s magazine ranking program.
In results released last week, Waterloo’s Biology program was placed 10th for 2021, rising in the rankings from 13th in 2020 and 15th in 2019.
“The Department of Biology prides itself in its continual improvement teaching and research in biology,” says Hugh Broders, chair of the department of biology. “We are delighted to be recognized for our passion and innovation in the field."
Maclean’s magazine ranks nine popular science and social science programs across all of Canada’s universities, using program reputation and research reputation. Waterloo was ranked in first-place ties for computer science, engineering and math, and amongst the top ten for business, environmental science, and psychology. The other programs in the Faculty of Science are not ranked by Macleans.
Scores were based on survey responses from 1,000 faculty members and senior administrators across Canada, who were asked to identify their area of expertise, then name up to 10 universities that they felt offered the best programs, and conducted the best research in their area.
Maclean’s has been rating and ranking universities in various categories for 30 years. Program areas have been evaluated for the last six years.
