acting, interim

An acting executive serves when the position is occupied but the incumbent is away. An interim executive is named when the position is otherwise vacant.
Example: Leo Rothenburg was acting dean of engineering while Adel Sedra was on sabbatical. 

advisor (not adviser)    

Affiliated and Federated Institutions of Waterloo (AFIW)   

  • This phrase has replaced “church colleges,” “university colleges” and “Federated University and Affiliated Colleges” as a collective term for Conrad Grebel University College, Renison University College, St. Jerome’s University, and United College.  
  • The term “University Colleges” is used in undergraduate recruitment material for clarity with a general audience.  

aging (not ageing) 

    alumni

    • “alum” (singular) and “alumni” (plural) are recommended 

    • gender-neutral terms “graduate” (singular) or “graduates” (plural) are acceptable if requested

    • Note: Alumna and alumnae are no longer being used. 

    Antirequisite (refers to courses) 
    A condition preventing enrolment in a course. The most common antirequisites are courses that have significant overlap. Antireq is a permitted short form in course descriptions. For more info, refer to the course description listings.   

    Applied Health Sciences (sciences is plural) 

    • The Faculty of Applied Health Sciences was renamed to the Faculty of Health on January 1, 2021.
