We all strive for a balance between every aspect of our lives such as socialization, school, activities, time for ourselves, etc. While academics are very important, it’s vital to find time to care for yourself as well. Learning these skills now can help you even beyond university. Here are some tips to help you get through stressful times and to reset your mind:
Your body needs 6-8 hours of sleep to function correctly. Sleep is a natural healing window for your body, and if you don’t to get enough of it, it can affect many aspects of your life. A great strategy to help your sleeping patterns is to turn off all devices at least 30 minutes before you go to bed. For more info about sleep health, see our Sleeping Well video.
Exercising can seriously help decrease your stress levels and clears your mind so that you can think better throughout the day. Simply going outside for a walk can have significant health benefits. So instead of procrastinating and sitting on your chair all day, go out and do some physical activity! Simple activities such as taking the stairs at the library or spending 10 minutes doing yoga with a yoga app can help, so you don’t need to be a gym-goer to derive benefits from this tip.
3. Eat healthy and balanced meals
When you think of foods that could serve as self-care ideas, you might think of treats like chips, cupcakes, pizza, or cupcakes. It’s okay to treat yourself now and then, however; if you want to practice self-care, you should be eating healthy foods that make you feel more energetic and stronger. According to Canada’s new food guide, you should be filling half your plate with vegetables and fruit, a quarter with whole grains and the remaining quarter with plant-based proteins. It is also emphasized making water your drink of choice due to its numerous positive effects. For more info about the food guide, see our recent blog post.
4. Practice relaxation techniques
Practicing relaxation techniques is a great way to boost your self-care because when doing these exercises, you are reducing stress, relaxing, and clearing your mind. You can practice relaxation techniques by finding a quiet spot to take deep breaths in a relaxed position. 5. Do something creative
Doing a creative activity can be enjoyable, relaxing, release stress, and take your thoughts away from the stressful situation that is looming. It could be anything from colouring, playing a musical instrument, painting a picture, doodling in your notebook, creating a D&D character, or starting a bullet journal.
It all comes down to putting your wellbeing above all else whether that be getting enough sleep, exercising more, drinking more water, eating healthy and balanced meals, practicing relaxation techniques, or doing something creative. For more self-care tips click here.
