Benefits of unplugging

Trying to do some last-minute studying for finals, but notice that you can’t help but do one more scroll through social media? Don’t let your screen slow you down! Taking a break from screen time has tons of benefits:

  1. It can help you be more productive. Are you writing a paper for end of term? It can be hard sometimes when you’re staring at a blank document for so long and words just aren’t coming. That blinking cursor taunting you. Why not take a break? Research shows that taking a brief break from the screen can actually help ‘restart’ your brain and get it moving again.
  2. It can prevent headaches. How are you supposed to get anything done when your head is pounding? High exposure to electronic screens is associated with a 37% increased likelihood of experiencing migraines. While less screen time can help you prevent this, other ways to prevent this would be blue light eyewear, which blocks the light that interferes your circadian rhythm.
  3. It can help you learn. Tossing and turning the night before an exam is stressful. Screen time before bed can make it more difficult to fall asleep. Studies have shown it canmake you take 10 more minutes to fall asleep. Not only does it affect falling asleep, it also reduced time spent in REM (Rapid Eye Movement) phase of sleep. It’s during REM when the brain consolidates learning.
