MATES (Mentor Assistance Through Education and Support) is a counselling-based, one-to-one peer support program offered by the Federation of Students (FEDs) and Counselling Services. MATES provides services to students who are experiencing social difficulties, mental health challenges, and transitional challenges adapting to university life or different cultures.
MATES volunteers go through an intensive selection process and receive extensive training in mentorship by Clinical Psychologists from Counselling Services. MATES volunteers are trained in the following areas:
- academic issues
- social and relationship difficulties
- mental health challenges
- transitional challenges to university life
- challenges in adapting to culture
The MATES program is under professional supervision by Clinical Psychologists and management staff from Counselling Services, assuring our clients and volunteers of their safety and confidentiality.
We offer both appointment and drop-in sessions. Students can set up an appointment with a MATES Peer Supporter by contacting us at our email address or by walking into Counselling Services for our drop-in hours to receive immediate support.

MATES services are available to all University of Waterloo students. If you are struggling or experiencing challenges that relate to your personal well-being, please contact us via email (firstname.lastname@example.org) or drop-in to our MATES office in Counselling Services. MATES volunteers will be available at both offices during appointment and drop-in hours.
Support after hours
UW MATES cannot provide peer support through email. Please utilize our drop-in hours Monday-Friday (10:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.) in Counselling Services Needles Hall North, 2nd floor for immediate support.
