SUMMARY:Rational & Irrational Choice in Flood Risk Management
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Although flood insurance has been available for decades in the
United\nStates\, many households who live in high-risk areas have not purc
hased\nflood insurance coverage\, despite mandatory purchase provisions th
at\naffect many. Dr. Craig Landry\, a professor and natural resource\necon
omist from the University of Georgia\, has been researching how\npeople ma
ke flood risk management decisions\, such as the choice to buy\nflood insu
rance coverage or not. In this webinar\, Dr.Landry will\ndiscuss how indiv
idual expectations\, perceptions\, and beliefs\ninfluence personal choices
in flood risk management and how social\nscientists can model such decisi
ons to learn about underlying factors\nthat motivate self-protection (or a
 lack thereof).

g sea levels\, changes to the intensity of storm surges\nand eroding coast
lines.\n\nOver the years\, governments have made efforts to identify\noppo
rtunities for adapting to climate change. For example\,\nmunicipalities in
the Province of Nova Scotia recently completed a\nMunicipal Climate Chang
e Action Plan (PDF)\n[https://novascotia.ca/dma/pdf/mun-climate-change-act

e structural\ninvestments (e.g.\, building sea walls) or non-structural me
asures\n(e.g.\, land use policy changes that account for sea level rise).
