Home, vehicle smoking bans can ignite decision to be smoke-free

A pair of recently published studies may provide hope for parents who fear protecting their children from smoking in the future is out of their reach.
“Enforced home and vehicle smoking bans appear to support youth in maintaining a resolve to not smoke, regardless of the smoking status of the parent,” said lead author Dr. Annette Schultz, an assistant professor in the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Manitoba, and an investigator at the PsychoSocial Oncology and Cancer Nursing Research Group at St. Boniface Hospital Research.

Youth survey finds levels of cigarillo use persist, but users don’t consider themselves ‘smokers’

Waterloo, ON (May 31, 2010) –The results of the latest national Youth Smoking Survey (YSS) indicate that youth are not seeing cigarillos as harmful as cigarettes, supporting the need for impending Bill C-32.

Passed in October 2009, Bill C-32 contained an immediate ban on tobacco advertising in newspapers and magazines. A ban on flavoured cigarettes, little cigars and blunt wraps at the manufacturer/import level followed on April 6, 2010, and by July 5, 2010 these flavoured tobacco products will be banned at the retail level.

Provincial Government Funds New Student Health Survey and School Health Grant Program

The provincial results of a student health survey were released today and new school health grants will be available for schools, says Education and Early Childhood Development Minister Doug Currie.

“For the first time, we have a reliable health profile of close to 10,000 Island youth,” said Minister Doug Currie. “Government is pleased to support this excellent research initiative with funding of $50,000 for schools to take the next steps in putting the research into practice.”
