An intraoral camera to be used by adult patients in North America to objectively measure plaque levels in the mouth at home, prompting targeted dental treatment. This solution reduces the number of major dental procedures by promoting patient-driven oral health care. An accompanying software application provides patients and dentists access to their digital health information.

Structural bone allografts are used in patients with bone defects brought about by either trauma or cancer. To identify bone that is suitable for use as a structural allograft, tissue processing technicians need to determine the structural integrity of donated cortical bone. The lack of standards in the field have resulted in existing methods being subjective and qualitative. To this end, Bonesai was developed to provide an objective and quantitative method of determining the mechanical competence of cortical bone allografts.

Amputees fit with lower-limb prosthetics are troubled with poorly fit attachment sites, or sockets. Over time, this can lead to discomfort, gait instability, pressure ulcers, swelling, prosthetic abandonment, and revision amputation. Augeo Medical presents an integrated smart sensing socket system with a companion application. The sensor system detects when socket fit is non-ideal and notifies the user via the application to adjust the fit, and provides instructions on how to do so.

Spinal Destination is a simple and portable surgical navigation system that assists orthopaedic surgeons in developing countries. Providing similar guidance information to room-sized, commercial navigation systems, our “system in a suitcase” allows surgeons to quickly identify the correct implant location during spine surgery through a single video camera/display. Mapping the desired 3D start point location from a surgeon-annotated CT scan to the 2D display of the patient’s exposed spine, Spinal Destination will empower surgeons with confidence to perform safe and effective surgeries in resource-poor environments.

Extended periods of bed rest can cause complications including neuromuscular weakness for patients in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Simple in-bed mobility exercises such as limb flexion and extension have been shown to help prevent this. Mobitrack is a wearable solution for tracking the unsupervised in-bed exercises performed by patients in the PICU. The device relies on an inertial measurement unit to detect the exercise repetitions, and relays this information back to medical caregivers, allowing them to better tailor mobility protocols for each patient.

Pressura is a cuffless, smartphone-based blood pressure measurement system that allows users to take control of their health by facilitating measurement, incentivizing self-monitoring and providing tips to reduce the risk of hypertension. By processing physiological data obtained non-invasively on the finger using signal processing and machine learning approaches, Pressura obtains blood pressure data and uses it to produce trends, reports and personalized health suggestions. Ultimately, this project aims to encourage users to take action to improve their health outcomes through increased awareness of their condition.

Children with medical complexities require around-the-clock care, therefore, often receive home care nursing to temporarily relieve family caregivers of their responsibilities. However, there is no standard for the handoff of care between these individuals. Stellar Care is a mobile application designed to facilitate effective communication between family caregivers and home care nurses for continuity of care.

The vast majority of fatal bicycle-vehicle collisions occur as the cyclist is hit from behind while a vehicle is attempting to pass. 71% of these collisions could have been avoided by increased cyclist awareness. CycleSafe’s goal is to increase cyclists’ posterior perception with a low budget system that utilizes a cyclist’s smartphone to detect approaching vehicles, alerting the user via haptic feedback. With the CycleSafe, cyclists can then take evasive measures to prevent life-threatening injuries.
