DESCRIPTION:DR. ELLIOT BIRO\, MANAGER\, PRODUCT CHARACTERIZATION ARCELORMIT
TAL\nGLOBAL RESEARCH\n\nTo improve automotive fuel economy while increasin
g crash resistance\,\nautomakers are increasingly using advanced high stre
ngth steels (AHSS)\nfor their vehicle designs. AHSS is a broad term for se
veral families\nof steels that have both high strength and high formabilit
 y. This\ncombination of properties allows parts to be made thinner and lig
hter\nwhile retaining their ability to form complex shapes needed for\naut
omotive parts as well as being able to absorb large amounts of\nenergy in
 crash situations.

SUMMARY:AUTO21 WORKSHOP ON AUTOMOTIVE WELDING
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:This one day workshop will focus on issues relating to vehicle\
 nlight-weighting\, such as joining\, corrosion\, and implementation of\ndi
ssimilar materials. Both academic and industrial speakers will\npresent th
eir latest findings and perspectives on subjects including:\n\n* Friction
stir welding\n * Corrosion of Mg alloys\n * Spot welding of light alloys\n
  * Joining of aluminum to steel\n * High productivity arc welding of alumi

SUMMARY:Visiting Researcher Seminar
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Original welding processes using the combination of a hot‐wir
e\nsystem and laser heat source are developed in Hiroshima University.\nTh
ese processes have advantages of low heat input\, low dilution\, high\ncon
trollability of weld metal and HAZ properties\, highefficiency\, and\nso o
 n. Some applications of hot‐wire laser welding process for a\nnarrowgap
 joint\, fillet welded joint\, heavy‐thick vertical joint\nwill be introd
uced. The observation techniques using image sensors for\ntemperature cycl
e\, solidification phenomena during welding will also\nbe introduced.
