The 2011 CAMJ annual holiday lunch

With plates loaded to near yield strength capacities the Centre for Advanced Materials Joining (CAMJ) bonded during the annual holiday lunch at the Mandarin. The group was tempered with the merriment of the season and conversation was diffuse throughout the dining area. Once the festivities were concluded, experts advised that the CAMJ apply a post meal sleep treatment.

Congratulations to Centre for Advanced Materials Joining members Ali Nasiri, Professor Norman Zhou, and Professor David Weckman for winning 1st place in the “Poster Competition of the Graduate Student Level” in the 92nd FABTECH International and American Welding Society Welding Show hosted in McCormick Place, Chicago, Illinois from November 14-17, 2011.

The nano-team in Centre for Advanced Materials Joining led by Professor Norman Zhou and Professor Anming Hu have successfully developed a comprehensive method to synthesize various metallic nanopastes. These nanopastes deposited on transparent polymeric substrates display tunable plasmonic properties, which can be used for improving the energy harvest efficiency of solar photovoltaic devices. The low temperature sintering of these nanopastes can be employed for plastic electronics packaging and high sensitive surface enhanced Raman probes.

Endorsed by Professor Norman Zhou, director of Centre for Advanced Materials Joining (CAMJ), University of Waterloo, and Professor Akio Hirose, professor from Osaka University, we successfully organized the International Workshop on Advanced Materials Joining and Processing in Waterloo, Canada, on October 21, 2011. The workshop was composed of 23 talks, separated into 5 sections focusing on the advanced materials joining and fabrication technologies.

Congratulations to Centre for Advanced Materials Joining director Professor Norman Zhou for being elected an ASM International Fellow for sustained contributions in innovative research and development in advanced materials joining technology and in the education of materials science students. Materials scientists and engineers from around the world elected 26 of their most innovative and influential peers from eight countries to become the 2011 class of fellows of ASM International, the Materials Information Society, Materials Park, Ohio.

Congratulations to the Centre for Advanced Materials Joining members Matthew Daly, Andrew Pequegnat, Ibraheem Khan, and Professor Norman Zhou for winning the "Best Student Paper Competition" at the ASME 2011 Conference (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) on Smart Materials, Adaptive Structures, and Intelligent Systems (SMASIS) hosted from September 18-21, 2011 in Scottsdale, Arizona. 

Professor Valeriy Kuznetsov from Kyiv Polytechnic Institute will be presenting a seminar on the works conducted at the Welding Faculty on the Kyiv campus. The seminar will take place August 2, 2011 at 9:30 am in the E5 3rd floor conference room (E5-3052). The seminar presentation will focus on the ongoing works relating to magnetic control of weld joints and surface engineering.

Professor Tillman, expert at law for Materials Technology from the Dortmund University of Technology in Germany will be holding a seminar on "Novel developments and applications of thermal spray for the automotive and tool industry". The seminar will be taking place Friday Nov. 20, 2009 from 9:30-10:30 in CPH 3602.

Agreement with Osaka University
