Corrosion performance on laser welded tailor blanks

The use of laser welding in the automotive industry has gained increasing popularity in the area of tailor blanks where weight and cost are reduced while structural strength is maintained. Generally, these steel sheets are galvanized to provide corrosion resistance but during the welding and subsequent forming process the galvanized layer is modified and possibly removed in the weld and the HAZ. There has been limited literature on the corrosion of laser welded galvanized blanks and the goal is to determine the influence of laser welding on the properties of zinc coating and ultimately the corrosion performance of these modified coating.
