Research Projects

Formability of Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS)

The use of new manufacturing concepts and advanced materials is of major interest to automobile manufacturers to reduce weight and cost and improve structural stiffness of body in white (BIW) structures. The present research focuses on butt welding of AHSS using a nuvonyx ISL-4000L Diode Laser System integrated with pneumatic Panasonic robotic arm. In order to evaluate the formability of tailor welded blanks, mechanical and material properties are explored using the facilities at the University of Waterloo in conjunction with our industrial sponsors. For example, Dofasco Hecker’s limiting dome height (LDH) test setup mounted to a double action press linked to a data acquisition system. Modeling and simulating the stretch forming process by commercially available CAD and CAE software packages like ProE, Hypermesh and Lsdyna give insight into the stress, strain distributions and other design and process issues of tooling related to the formability of welded and as received materials.
