Research Projects

Surface modification of resistance welding electrode

This work will first perform screening trials for different coating compositions (such as Cu-Ni-TiC and Cu-Ni-WC) with different coating process (such as arc coating and high velocity oxyfuel spraying). Second, the mechanisms on how coating chemistry affects coating quality and electrode life will be investigated. Third, the coating composition would be optimized, possibly for different coating processes. Electrode life tested and detailed metallurgical investigations (using scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy and x-ray diffraction, etc.) of tested electrodes will be performed to study the effectiveness of the coatings.
