The German Language Film Festival takes place in May and is a collection of three movies, one each from Austria, Germany and Switzerland.

May 30, 2018 - Austria - "We used to be cool" (Was hat uns bloß so ruiniert?)
SYNOPSIS - Three couples who are friends decide to all become parents at the same time. They are more on the young side age-wise, professionally successful and cool. Both idealistic and materialistic, they grow organic tomatoes on the balcony of their inner-city apartment, drink locally roasted coffee and Hugo cocktails, once took part in the Thursday demonstrations and would never purchase an electronic device without an apple logo on it. And they are sure that people can have kids without becoming bourgeois.

June 6, 2018 - Switzerland - "Dark Fortune" (Dunkles Glück)
SYNOPSIS - Psychologist Eliane Hess is summoned to the hospital for an emergency. An eight-year-old boy, Yves, has just been admitted; he has lost his parents and siblings in a car crash. The boy is in shock, babbles incessantly without saying a single word about the unspeakable disaster.
Initially, Eliane, a single mother with two daughters, remains professionally detached. However, she cannot help being moved by the fate of this traumatized child and the family drama that caused it, for his father may possibly have crashed into the wall of the tunnel intentionally. Eliane becomes increasingly involved and, in consequence, increasingly unable to maintain her professional detachment; she wants to help and protect the child at all costs, for instance, from his aunt and grandmother, who are both fighting for custody of the boy. What‘s more, the boy‘s fate unexpectedly unleashes painful, long suppressed memories of her own, affecting not only herself but her daughters as well. Eliane‘s feelings for the boy become even more intense when he is assigned to her for temporary custody.
A sudden turn of events wreaks havoc: Yves‘s aunt is granted custody after all. The boy cannot cope, apathetically he permits himself himself to be taken away and when he finally fights back, it is too late. Something has to be done and, in the end, the life of Eliane Hess and her daughters takes an unexpected, unorthodox turn that culminates in the newly configured family returning to the Alsace and the fateful site of the accident. An audacious excursion of uncertain outcome. A journey that ends in hope.
