SUMMARY:WCGS Book Prize Lecture with Michelle Lynn Kahn
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:This lecture explores the transnational history of Turkish migr
ants in\nGermany. By the 1980s\, amid rising racism\, neo-Nazis and ordina
ry\nGermans blamed Turks for unemployment\, criticized their Muslim faith\
,\nand argued they could never integrate. In 1983\, policymakers enacted a
\ncontroversial law: paying Turks to leave. Thus commenced one of modern\n
Europe's largest and fastest waves of remigration: within one year\,\n15%
 of the migrants—250\,000 men\, women\, and children—returned to\nTurke
 y. Their homeland\, however\, ostracized them as culturally\nestranged 'Ge
rmanized Turks’ (Almancı). Michelle Lynn Kahn\nhighlights migrants’ p
ersonal stories\, revealing how many felt\nforeign in two homelands.
