Lichtgrenze (The Berlin Wall as a Border of Light): A Talk by Creator Marc Bauder

Friday, May 29, 2015 3:30 pm - 3:30 pm EDT (GMT -04:00)

A large crowd of people at Lichtgrenze, the art installation by Marc and Christopher Bauder
Marc Bauder will talk about how he and his brother, Christopher, conceived and executed a public art installation to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. The presentation will be in English, and all are welcome.

Marc and Christopher used approximately 8,000 large balloons, each one mounted on its own self-powered light post, to mark a 15.3-kilometer stretch of the Berlin Wall throughout Germany's capital from November 7-9, 2014. On November 9, spectators helped release the balloons. Read uWaterloo's Daily Bulletin for more information.

To see the public art installation, visit the brothers' website devoted to their project. Although much of the site is in German, the photos and videos will show you the size, scope, and impact of the 8,000 lit balloons.

Marc's presentation is part of the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies' annual conference. Additional funding for his visit is provided by the Canadian Association of University Teachers of German and the Goethe-Institut Toronto.
