Application procedure and adjudication

Students must submit two documents to the Waterloo Centre for German Studies by March 1 as part of their application. This is for exchanges beginning between May of the year of application and April the following year.

  1. A letter of intent. This should be a maximum of one page (not longer, please). Students should detail their experience and background in studying the German language, culture, and history and their motivation and plans for their study period abroad. They should also include which Germanic & Slavic courses they have taken thus far. The letter of intent should be a Word or PDF file and attached to their email.
  2. Applicants need to provide a letter of acceptance or equivalent for the courses or study program at a university in a German-speaking country. If a letter of acceptance is not yet available, then students should mention this in their email.
  3. Applications must be submitted via email to wcgs@uwaterloo.ca by March 1.

Applications will be adjudicated by the Awards Committee of the Waterloo Centre for German Studies. Successful applicants who are not Canadian citizens and need a visa for their stay abroad need to provide evidence of having met all visa requirements before the Travel Grant can be released. Award recipients are expected to write a one-page informal report about their study-abroad experience. They must submit it to the e-mail address of the Waterloo Centre for German Studies at the latest one month after completing their study abroad.
