At Waterloo and around the world, the number of online courses and programs continues to grow and even “traditional classrooms” are including more and more digital elements. (Think online content students review before participating in a flipped classroom, or low-stakes assessment activities that students complete for practice/review, for example.) If you have been assigned the role of authoring something digital, or even if you are just considering whether or not to begin such a project, come talk to us!
In this workshop, we’ll highlight the opportunities provided by digital learning materials and alert you to the workload implications and ways in which authoring time and resources are sometime used inefficiently. We’ll discuss cognitive principles as they apply to online learners, offer numerous design and development tips, share sample lessons and activities, and provide you with some checklists to remember our key takeaways. Plenty of flexibility will be built into the workshop so the emphasis of our discussion and the sample lessons and activities we demo will reflect the interest of our participants.
Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs)
By the end of this workshop, you should be able to:
- thoroughly discuss authoring contracts;
- breakdown the steps required to author digital assets and establish a workflow that includes all stakeholders;
- start identifying and applying best practices to the design of digital assets;
- plan projects in a way that accurately reflects the amount of work required to design and produce high quality digital assets; and
- list resources available for staff and faculty looking to create digital assets at the University of Waterloo.
Registration

Cancellations
Many of our workshops have waiting lists, so if you've registered but can't attend, please cancel your registration well in advance through the registration system, so that someone else can fill your spot.
