Workshop description

Online submission and grading offers a number of important benefits for the management of assignments and tests in courses of medium to large attendance:

  • Online submission saves time for students and markers and reduces the chance of misplaced papers.

  • Submissions are anonymous to markers.

  • Grades are calculated and available automatically

  • Marking quality is easier to supervise and monitor.

  • Original marked papers are available online for instructor-student meetings.

  • New and pre-defined grading comments can be shared and reused by markers.

This session introduces a tool named Crowdmark that is available free for UWaterloo courses. It is an online system for the distribution, collection, grading and return of assignment papers and tests. You will get to evaluate the system first hand from both student and instructor points-of-view for comparison to your current method of assignment management. Also briefly introduced will be a companion UWaterloo system called Odyssey, which provides examination seat assignment and printing services. Crowdmark has been used in more than 200 courses at Waterloo in the past year. Savings in grading time have been reported in the area of 20-40%. A two-minute video explaining how Crowdmark works is available. (60 minutes)

Learning outcomes:

After the session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the functionality of Crowdmark

  • Assess whether Crowdmark can replace your current method of assignment management.
