Workshop description
Learn about innovative ways instructors are using blended learning in two presentations from Learning Innovation and Teaching Enhancement (LITE) grant recipients. Researchers from the Civil & Environmental and Chemical Engineering will share findings and insights from their projects. Since 2012, 91 LITE grant projects have been awarded to instructors and staff investigating innovative approaches to enhancing teaching and fostering deep student learning at the University of Waterloo. Online forums shape learning experiences. Rania Al-Hammoud (Civil and Environmental Engineering)
With the development of technology, students are more inclined to use online forums to help them with their courses. A concern is that these discussions, however, is that they are not monitored for quality. “Piazza” is an online discussion forum that the instructor can set up for the class to allow students to learn from each other in a monitored but anonymous environment. This talk will discuss findings from our research study testing the efficacy of this method and techniques that will help you and your students use this forum effectively.
Learner-content interaction as a key to the effectiveness of a blended-learning model incorporating open access online modules. Jason Grove (Chemical Engineering)
Over the past two years, we have been developing a blended course offering for a large service course – Chemistry for Engineers. The objective of this change is to make the best use of in-class time by focusing on aspects of the course that students find most challenging (problem solving) rather than delivery of theoretical principles (which can be effectively accomplished online). Our study compares and contrasts student experience, satisfaction and performance between the blended learning and traditional lecture models of instruction using data from surveys and grades.
