New Faculty Teaching Day (CTE9906, CTE9910, CTE9912)

The Centre for Teaching Excellence will be hosting a winter term New Faculty Teaching Day on Friday, January 25, 2019. This day is intended for those new faculty members that arrived after (or missed) our August Teaching Orientation Days. We will be offering three of our four core new faculty workshops all on one day (See below for descriptions). The fourth core workshop, Course Design Foundations, will be offered as a part of our regular winter term programming, and can be completed on Tuesday, February 5, 2019.

In addition to the workshops, new faculty are invited to attend the New Faculty Welcome Luncheon (on the same day Friday, January 25, 2019) taking place at the University Club from 12:30 to 2:15 pm. During the luncheon you will have the opportunity to meet members of some key Academic Support Units on campus as well as your own new faculty cohort group. The workshops are scheduled around the luncheon.

CTE9910 Who Are Our Learners
Rumours abound about "students today" and, more locally, about "Waterloo students." This session provides an overview of learning and learners generally, and also more specifically at Waterloo. The information provided will allow you to better plan your teaching in light of learner characteristics, generally and at Waterloo. 

CTE9906 Classroom Dynamics and Engagement
What will you do when a student arrives late to your class? Disturbs others in the class with inappropriate laptop use? Tells you that your course is much harder than all their other courses? These are everyday issues that every faculty member will experience. At this workshop, you will become aware of common issues in classroom dynamics and will work to devise strategies to handle these issues. We will also consider the impacts of the potential strategies developed in terms of learner motivation and engagement. 

CTE9912 Assessment for Learning
How do we know students know and can do new things as a result of our courses and assignments? How will they know they know? Assessment decisions are made in the context of course objectives and constrained by class size and grading time allotted. We'll cover principles of feedback and evaluation of student work as well as practical advice. Participants will leave with the knowledge required to start an assessment plan for a course or assignment, along with tips about assessment tools such as rubrics, group grading forms, and multiple choice.
