Special Topics in Teaching: How can TAs & Instructors Support Student Mental Health? (CTE219)

Wednesday, November 8, 2017 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm EST (GMT -05:00)
Location: EV1 241
Facilitator: Kristin Brown (CTE)

Description

Recent reports suggest that many students in Canadian post-secondary institutions are experiencing a spectrum of mental health concerns, including overwhelming anxiety and depression. In many cases, mental health problems lead to lower GPAs and an increased chance of withdrawal from academic programs. Teaching assistants (TAs) and instructors are often first to observe negative academic outcomes yet there is uncertainty regarding their roles in supporting student mental health. In this workshop, we’ll explore how TAs and instructors can provide classroom support for student mental health. By the end of the workshop, you will be able to:

  1. Recognize ways TAs and instructors can identify and support students with their mental health
  2. Identify opportunities for enhancing student resilience and well-being in the classroom
  3. Apply strategies presented in the workshop when working with undergraduate students
