Teaching Practices to Cultivate Well-being and Compassion [Inclusive Instruction Series] (CTE2268)

Tuesday, March 2, 2021 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm EST (GMT -05:00)
Location: Online (Webex Meetings)

Workshop description

Recent campus surveys show that many of our undergraduate students experience feelings of isolation and stress which may negatively impact their learning and motivation and decrease sense of belonging in courses. As TAs and instructors, we can take a proactive approach to enhance a sense of belonging and well-being in our courses, and to demonstrate care and compassion in our interactions with students. This panel features two Waterloo graduate-student instructors and two Waterloo staff who will share their insights, strategies, and advice for supporting student well-being and maintaining your own well-being in your role as a TA or graduate instructor. Teaching strategies will focus on remote courses. You’ll also have an opportunity to ask questions you have about supporting and maintaining well-being in your role as a TA or graduate instructor.

Panelists:

Emma Green (PhD Candidate, Psychology)

sarah madoka currie (PhD Student, English Language and Literature)

Leah Foster (Student Wellness Coordinator, Electrical and Computer Engineering)

Sam Vandekerckhove (Student Wellness Coordinator, Mechanical and Mechatronics Engineering)
