Techniques for Using Piazza to Increase Student Engagement (CTE794)

Workshop description
With the development of technology, students are inclined more and more to use available online forums to help them with their courses. An example is Facebook group created by each cohort where they tend to ask and answer questions related to their courses. Concerns students have is that those questions and answers in most cases are not monitored and they are not sure if they are correct or not. “Piazza” is an online discussion forum that the instructor can set up for the class to allow students to learn from each other in a monitored environment. It also allows students to post questions anonymously to each other which is seen as a huge advantage by most of the students. This workshop will help you setup a “Piazza” discussion forum for your class. It will also discuss techniques that will help you and the students use this forum in a most efficient way. In preparation for this class, bring your course syllabus as well as the topics you are planning to cover in the course.
Learning Outcomes: After the session, participants will be able to:
- design your course on “Piazza”
- apply techniques that will help increase student engagement online
- increase student engagement in the classroom
