Rachel Beaver is a PhD student in the department of Biology. She holds a BSc and MSc in biology from the University of Waterloo. Her current research focuses on characterizing and quantifying the microorganisms in bentonite clay exposed to various conditions to identify the conditions necessary to suppress microbial growth in a deep geological repository for long-term nuclear waste storage. Rachel has completed the Centre for Teaching Excellence’s Fundamentals in University Teaching program and is currently enrolled in the Certificate of University Teaching program. Rachel has been a TA for several biology lab courses, where she applies the teaching strategies she has learned throughout the FUT and CUT programs to her teaching.
