Research on teaching and learning

textbooksThe scholarship of teaching and learning views teaching as more than the transmission of knowledge. Learning is the active construction of knowledge by students; teaching creates the opportunities, capabilities, and motivation for this learning to occur. A scholarly approach to teaching engages faculty – and students – in research to develop, evaluate, and share advances for learning.

Contributions to advancing knowledge through our research into student learning include conducting assessments of the impacts of teaching practices on learning outcomes and developing research-based innovations in teaching. These contributions are explored and disseminated through the Teaching-Based Research Group, the annual Opportunities and New Directions conference, and publications and presentations.
