Goals Will Change; the Workplace Will Change; You Will Change!
Embracing change is a fundamental part of being a lifelong learner and has become a core part of the employee experience in today's workplace landscape. You must always be willing to accept and adjust to change to be able to grow, develop and transition to new opportunities.
According to industry trends, most individuals who identify as part of the Millennial and Gen Z generations stay at a job for two to three years; previous generations stayed in a job on average for five to eight years (Paulise, 2021). These trends are informed by a complex web of societal, cultural, and industry factors that may or may not apply to you; regularly or semi-regularly experiencing new workplaces and types of work throughout your career may occur because of these factors or because you might decide to switch workplaces or careers that are more in alignment with your values and needs, interests, skill development, and/or impact you’d like to have.
Lifelong learning practices, such as goal-setting, can support you in adapting into new workplaces; and, new opportunities can often contribute to your ongoing learning and personal growth by developing new skills and knowledge. It can also prompt self-reflection, uncover areas for improvement, or identify shifting values (Perna, 2023).
Hopefully, through ongoing and consistent critical self-reflection, you will maintain a clear understanding of yourself and your trajectory, as well as what skills or competencies you may need to learn to be continuously engaged and fulfilled in the work that you do.
