Joe Quadrilatero.
Dr. Joe Quadrilatero is an associate professor in the Department of Kinesiology at the University of Waterloo. His primary research focus is to investigate the biochemical and molecular mechanisms that regulate cell death processes (i.e. apoptosis and autophagy) in tissues, particularly in skeletal muscle.

More specifically, his research examines: 1) the general mechanisms of cell death signaling during health, aging, and disease, 2) the role of mitochondrial function and oxidative stress on cell death signaling, 3) the influence of apoptotic factors, such as apoptosis repressor with caspase recruitment domain (ARC) on skeletal muscle development and apoptosis, and 4) the potential benefits of physical activity on cell death processes in skeletal muscle. He is also particularly interested in investigating the role of cell death processes in tissue susceptibility to and recovery from injury.

Ultimately, Dr. Quadrilatero’s research will have important implications in the prevention, rehabilitation, and treatment of tissue injuries and disorders.
