SUMMARY:Seminar - “Engineering Anticancer Bacterial Therapies”\, by\nPr
ofessor Neil Forbes\, Department of Chemical Engineering\,University\nof M
 assachusetts\, Amherst\, MA
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT:  Engineered bacteria have the potential to overcome
the\nlimitations that cause common cancer therapies to fail. Synthetic\nbi
ology is playing a critical role in the creation of these therapies.\nWe h
ave shown that bacteria\, specifically _Salmonella_\, have three\nmain qua
lities that enable them to overcome the limitations of\nchemotherapy. Bact
 eria 1) preferentially target tumors\, 2) penetrate\ntissue\, and 3) can k
 ill non-mitotic cells.
