DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT\n\nThe past decade has witnessed the tremendous power 
 of systems and\nsynthetic biology in the creation of genetic parts\, devic
 es\, and\nsystems\, which helps understand complex biological systems.  H
 owever\,\nits potential for real-world applications has not been fully\nex
 ploited. One of its promising applications is the construction of\nprogram
 mable cells that integrate multiple environmental signals and\nimplement s
 ynthetic control over biological processes. My research\ninterests are foc
 used on developing microbes and microbiota that can\nprocess multiple inpu
 t signals and generate user-defined outputs.\nSpecifically\, I aim to buil
 d genetic programs to control various\nbacterial processes such as gene ex
 pression\, chemical reactions\, and\nevolution. I will present published a
 nd unpublished results of my\nselected research projects by discussing the
  potential and challenges\nof systems and synthetic biology to address glo
 bal problems\, including\nplastic and agricultural waste issues\, non-inva
 sive diagnostics and\ndisease treatment using smart probiotics and microbi
 ota engineering\,\nsustainable bioproduction\, and biocontainment of genet
 ically\nengineered microbes.
