SUMMARY:Seminar - “Biochemical Control of Phosphate Mineral Saturation: A
\nProposal for Polyphosphates” by Sidney Omelon\, Assistant Professor\,\
 nChemical Engineering\, University of Ottawa
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT:  The rigidity of our skeleton is due to reinforcemen
t with\nnano-sized minerals of biological apatite.  Theories of skeletal\
napatite nucleation include initiation by the organic matrix (collagen\nan
 d non-collagenous proteins)\, and increasing the phosphate\nconcentration
by hydrolysis of phosphoric acid monoesters.  An enzyme\nthat has been at
tributed to skeletal mineralization -\ntissue-nonspecific alkaline phospha
tase (TNAP) - is known to increase\ninorganic phosphate concentration by c
atalyzing phosphoric acid\nmonoester hydrolysis.  However\, the substrate
