SUMMARY:Seminar - “Surface Modification of Polymeric Biomaterials to Impr
ove\nInterfacial Interactions” by Kyla Sask\, PhD
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT:  Polymers and other materials that are used in conta
ct with\nbiological fluids such as blood are prone to protein adsorption a
nd\ncell interactions. A protein layer quickly forms at the surface of the
\nmaterial and can influence the subsequent adhesion of platelets\,\nleuko
cytes\, other cells and microbes. For medical devices this can\nlead to nu
merous complications including coagulation\, thrombosis\n(blood clotting)
 and infection\, among others.
