SUMMARY:Seminar - “Flocculation of Mature Fine Tailings: Is there a Solut
ion\nin Sight for the Canadian Oil Sands Environmental Challenge?” by\nJ
oao B.P. Soares\, Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering\,\nUniv
 ersity of Alberta\, Edmonton\, AB
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT:  Oil sands are a strategic resource for Canada\, but
despite\ntechnological advances in extraction techniques\, the treatment
of\ntailing ponds resulting from bitumen extraction is plagued by many\nen
vironmental challenges. The crucial technical challenge is to\nseparate bi
tumen from the sand and clay particles\, then flocculate or\nstack the cla
y particles to release water that can be recycled to the\nbitumen extracti
on process. The clays can then be placed in the mine\,\ngiving rapid recla
mation without forming tailing ponds that may take\ndecades to be reclaime
 d.
