SUMMARY:Seminar | Strategies for Anti-Thrombotic Blood Pumping: Innovations
on\nMaterials and Pumping Mechanisms\, by Dr. Yap Choon Hwai
CLASS:PUBLIC
DESCRIPTION:Every day\, countless lives are saved by blood pumps\, includin
g those\nthat have been implanted and those used in the Intensive Care Uni
t\n(ICU)\, in heart surgery and during hemodialysis. Blood pumps\,\nhowev
er\, damage blood by exposing it to high stresses\, causing\nplatelet acti
vation and hemolysis\, which leads to blood clots. For\nexample\, seven pe
rcent of ICU patients on the extracorporeal membrane\noxygenation (ECMO) b
lood pump suffer from severe hemolysis\, which\nincreases the mortality ra
 te by six times.
