DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT \nThe simulation of flows using computational fluid dy
namics (CFD) has\nadvanced considerably in recent decades and is now an es
sential tool\nacross industries ranging from aerospace design to process\n
engineering. Although CFD is relatively mature for single-phase flows\,\nm
ultiphase flows (such as particle-laden flows) and multiphysics flows\n(su
ch as those including microwaves or ultrasound) remain\nsignificantly more
challenging to simulate\, in part due to their\nintrinsic multiscale natu
re and conflicting numerical need.\n\nIn the recent years\, high-order met
hods have gained considerable\nmomentum in aeronautics\, in part due to th
eir significantly lower\ndispersion and dissipation\, but also for their h
igher arithmetic\nintensity (FLOPS-to-byte ratio) which suits current hard
ware\ncapabilities. However\, these methods remain seldomly used in\nchemi
cal-engineering applications\, in part due to their multiphase and\nmultip
 hysics nature.\n\n

DESCRIPTION:ABSTRACT\n\nThe past decade has witnessed the tremendous power
of systems and\nsynthetic biology in the creation of genetic parts\, devic
es\, and\nsystems\, which helps understand complex biological systems.  H
owever\,\nits potential for real-world applications has not been fully\nex
ploited. One of its promising applications is the construction of\nprogram
mable cells that integrate multiple environmental signals and\nimplement s
ynthetic control over biological processes. My research\ninterests are foc
used on developing microbes and microbiota that can\nprocess multiple inpu
t signals and generate user-defined outputs.\nSpecifically\, I aim to buil
d genetic programs to control various\nbacterial processes such as gene ex
 pression\, chemical reactions\, and\nevolution. I will present published a
nd unpublished results of my\nselected research projects by discussing the
potential and challenges\nof systems and synthetic biology to address glo
 bal problems\, including\nplastic and agricultural waste issues\, non-inva
sive diagnostics and\ndisease treatment using smart probiotics and microbi
ota engineering\,\nsustainable bioproduction\, and biocontainment of genet
 ically\nengineered microbes.

DESCRIPTION:Biomass plays a key role in capturing and storing solar energy
on\nEarth. It is estimated that up to 8\,500 exjoules (×10¹⁸ joules) o
f\nsolar energy are captured and stored globally each year through\nbiomas
s\, which is about 10-15 times the current global energy\nconsumption (580
exajoules). This presentation provides an overview of\nthe availability o
f biomass and organic solid waste resources\nglobally\, as well as in Chin
ese mainland and Hong Kong\, and introduces\nhydrothermal technologies and
their applications in the transformation\nof biomass and organic solid wa
ste. During these transformations\,\nwater is used as a reaction medium\,
 solvent\, reactant\, or catalyst.\nHydrothermal technology is especially s
uitable for the resource\nutilization of high-moisture biomass and biowast
 e (such as food waste\,\nsewage sludge\, manure slurry\, microalgae\, etc.
)\, as it eliminates the\ncostly dehydration/drying process (which is esse
ntial for other\nthermochemical processes like combustion\, pyrolysis\, an
 d\ngasification). This presentation summarizes Professor Xu's team's past\
nresearch achievements in various hydrothermal technology development\,\ni
ncluding methanol aqueous phase reforming (APR) for hydrogen\nproduction\,
biomass hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) to produce\nwater-charcoal\, hyd
rothermal liquefaction of biomass waste (HTL) to\nproduce biocrude oil\, a
nd supercritical water gasification (SCWG) of\naqueous biomass (sugars) to
produce green hydrogen. Professor Xu will\nalso share his experience in s
caling HTL technology to 6 kg/h and 100\nkg/h\, as well as ongoing commerc
ialization efforts\, including building\npilot units with a daily throughp
ut of 10 tons and demonstration units\nwith a daily throughput of 100 tons
 .
