Seminar | Battery Research at NRC with Focus on Materials Chemistry and Engineering, by Dr. Yaser Abu-Lebdeh

Please join the Department of Chemical Engineering on Friday, August 2, for a seminar by Dr. Yaser Abu-Lebdeh, Senior Research Officer at National Research Council of Canada (NRC). He will give an overview of the NRC’s battery technology research activities.

Abstract

Dr. Abu-Lebdeh will give an overview of battery technology research activities across NRC to give the audience a sense of what a government research scientist does and to entice graduate students to consider pursuing a career in government, rather than in industry and academia, using examples of pros and cons from his personal experience.

He will then summarize recent NRC research activities that use a holistic approach to improve the performance of the Li-ion battery’s main components (electrodes and electrolyte) simultaneously.

He will conclude by introducing the most suitable approach for reaching increased practical energy densities with a reasonable battery lifecycle, at low cost and minimum disruption to manufacturing process.

Biographical Sketch  

Dr. Abu-Lebdeh has been a Senior Research Officer at the National Research Council of Canada in Ottawa since 2005. His research focuses on energy storage and conversion materials and devices, with a focus on lithium batteries.

Dr. Abu-Lebdeh earned his PhD in electrochemistry from the University of Southampton (UK) in 2001, his Master’s degree in material science from the University of Manchester (UK) in 1997 and his bachelor’s degree in industrial chemistry from Jordan University of Science and Technology in 1995. Before joining the National Research Council of Canada, he was a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Montreal’s International Laboratory on Electro-active Materials.
