Seminar | Engineering Value, by Dr. David Bruce

Friday, October 26, 2018 11:00 am - 11:00 am EDT (GMT -04:00)

In engineering, as in life, there is usually no defined path or prescribed route to take in search of difficult answers. Looking at how we travel through our careers, transitioning to industry from our studies or taking the next step in academia, we can examine the critical decisions and choices we make in how we can grow to best serve our profession. Value in being an engineer comes from how we make these choices and in learning how to shape the driving factors behind the process itself. Please join us for a discussion about our value in society and how we can work to increasing the golden mean.

Bio-sketch

Dr. Bruce has a passion for technology development with a focus on integrated societal engagement. He holds a B.A.Sc. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Waterloo, an M.A.Sc. in Materials Science & Engineering from McMaster University, and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of British Columbia. He has studied and worked in the fuel cell field for 17 years in a variety of energy disciplines, with industrial experience at ZincNyx Energy Solutions Inc., Ballard Power Systems Inc., and Hydrogenics Inc.

Dr. Bruce has expertise ranging from fuel cell systems design to research in hydrogen storage materials, solar cells, and catalyst development. Through this work, Dr. Bruce has developed an integral understanding into efficient systems design for electrochemical processes and has bridged technological systems for energy generation and storage. Dr. Bruce most recently helped develop a novel grid scale zinc-air fuel cell system at ZincNyx Energy Solutions and has focused on methods of improving the efficiency and manufacturability of that system.

Earlier this year, Dr. Bruce expanded his entrepreneurial ventures and founded Sagacious Design, a bespoke engineering design firm focused on helping companies refine their manufacturing and technical development pathways.

In his free time, Dr. Bruce is an avid sculptor, painter, and photographer and enjoys exploring the beauty of our natural environment.
