CHE team designs award-winning Power-to-Gas system

A team from the University of Waterloo’s department of Chemical Engineering earned second place in the Hydrogen Education Foundation's 2018 Hydrogen Student Design Contest. The award was announced during the U.S. Department of Energy’s Annual Merit Review in Washington, DC.

This international competition included 27 teams from around the world, all working to design a Power-to-Gas system for cross market uses, including energy storage, ancillary services and transportation fuel. The winning Waterloo team, comprised of students Sami Barbouti, Ehsan Haghi, Ushnik Mukherjee, Nick Preston, Hassan Riaz, Peter Tang and Javan Wang, was mentored by Professor Michael Fowler and Dr. Azadeh Maroufmashat.

Professor of chemical engineering Costas Tzoganakis and University of Waterloo startup Tyromer Inc. are poised to change the way the world handles its scrap tires. Judging by their recent collection of awards, their innovative, sustainable technology is getting noticed.

CHE’s Gregory Lui wins big at 3MT finals

A big congratulations to PhD candidate Gregory Lui for his exciting achievements at the 2018 national Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition. He made UWaterloo and the department of Chemical Engineering proud with his engaging and informative summary of his photocatalysis research. The 3MT judges and audience were impressed too – he headed back to Waterloo with a second place finish and the People’s Choice award.

CHE’s Gregory Lui wins UWaterloo’s 3MT finals

Congratulations to Gregory Lui, who is completing his PhD in Chemical Engineering at University of Waterloo, for winning the University’s Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition. 3MT is an international research communication competition in which graduate students have three minutes to distill their research into a presentation that is both understandable and engaging to a non-technical audience.
