ABSTRACT: As group leaders, we are asked to submit fundamental research proposals with carefully planned goals and methodology. However different issues often force us to consider other funding sources, or alternate methods to maintain a reasonable level of research activity. This is typically achieved by initiating industry-sponsored research projects, either peripherally related to or completely disconnected from our own interests, and by becoming involved in multiple collaborative projects. My career path was not very different from what many other researchers have experienced over the years, but I will attempt to summarize my 30-year career at the University of Waterloo, in terms of both research challenges and achievements.
