Post-doctoral researcher Drew Bennett wins Polanyi Prize

Researchers based at the University of Waterloo have won two of five prestigious Polanyi Prizes given to leading researchers in Ontario this year.

Drew Bennett, a post-doctoral researcher in the Department of Chemistry, is being honoured for groundbreaking research that may improve treatment for serious diseases like cancer and Parkinson’s. He uses computer simulations to study biological problems.

Tier 2 Canada Research Chairs awarded to Dr. Derek Schipper and Dr. German Sciaini

Congratulations to Dr. Derek Schipper and Dr. German Sciaini who have been awarded Tier 2 Canada Research Chairs.

Dr. Schipper's research program is based on the development of novel synthetic methods that allow efficient access to important conjugated materials. Ultimately, his group will seek to utilize these materials in applications such as organic photovoltaics, light emitting diodes and field-effect transistors.

Waterloo’s ACE satellite key to tracking ozone recovery

Despite recent increases in the concentration of ozone depleting gases in the stratosphere, the ban on CFCs under the Montreal Protocol is still working and will eventually restore the ozone layer.
