West meets East: Greeks, Persians, and the Birth of "Orientalism" by Dr. Sheila Ager

At the beginning of the fifth century BC, the Persian Empire sent two expeditionary forces against Greece in an attempt to bring the Greeks under their rule. These were the years of some of the most famous battles in history: Marathon, Thermopylae, Salamis. The Greek success in driving back the Persian invaders was seen in later years as the most glorious moment in all their history.

Guest Lecture: Dr. David Rupp

The Canadian Ambassador in Greece, the Honourable Mr. Robert Peck, along with the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University are proud to present a lecture by Dr. David Rupp, Director of the Canadian Institute in Greece. The lecture, which is open to the public, is titled Canadians Take the Field Throughout Greece.

Dr. Rupp will discuss the three decades of Canadian archaeological work in Greece, the activities and mission of the Canadian Institute in Greece (CIG) and help commemorate the 70th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Greece and Canada.

Please join us as we celebrate the achievements of Canadian archaeology, as well as the enduring friendship between Canada and the Hellenic Republic.

The lecture will take place at the University of Waterloo, in PHY 285, on Tuesday, October 1 from 1:00-2:30.

This year's annual Fall lecture, presented by the Classical Association of Canada, Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Waterloo, will be given by Prof. John Oleson from the University of Victoria. The lecture is titled Harena sine calce ("Sand without Lime"): Building Disasters, Incompetent Architects, and Construction Fraud in Ancient Rome.
